The Furnace Press
Decomposition Series
Contest Guidelines
The Furnace Press Decomposition Series focuses
on interesting abandoned sites in New York State. We are looking
for book proposals that are captivating, innovative, and add to
the appreciation of forgotten ruins in New York.
General Information
The Decomposition Series was conceived as an attempt
to creatively commemorate vanishing ruins in New York.
We're interested
not only in recording the history of places facing obliteration,
but of capturing them during their transition from use to abandonment
and beyond. Whether the sites in question are e.g. the industrial
buildings along the Brooklyn waterfront, the Glenwood power plant,
or the historic subway tunnel in Rochester, our aim is the creative
preservation of these places in words, photos, and memory before
they are destroyed.
The series will consist of five books, which can
include history, architectural speculation, fiction, or personal
memory, along with a number of illustrations. For example, the
text might focus on historic events during the construction and
use, a comparative analysis of the architecture, or an insightful
record of exploring a ruin.
The books will be from
40-60 pages in length, perfect bound, with a 4-color cover, and
with publication starting in late 2007. The series has received
generous support from the New York State Council for the Arts
(NYSCA).
Constest Information
Authors will be responsible for providing both
manuscripts and images. The authors can come from a variety
of backgrounds - architecture, urban planning, history, urban exploration,
the arts - what matters is that the presentation is interesting
and accurate. Collaborations are encouraged.
In our selection of the winning manuscript,
we will place great value on the quality of the writing
and images, originality, and the architectural merit of the site.
Please note that all structures must be located in the state of
New York. The proposals should be from 3 to 5 pages in length
with up to 5 sample graphics. There is neither an entry fee nor
honorarium. Upon selection, Furnace Press will design, publish
and distribute the winning entry and provide ten contributor's
copies to the author.
The final manuscript will be due in spring 2008
for publication later in 2008.
